West Plains Missouri has a rich and interesting past beginning with Josiah Howell who homesteaded in 1839 at the town spring where the public library now stands. In 1850, John Woodside laid out West Plains with Josephus M. Howell opening the first post office. He named it for the location - on the "plains west" of Thomasville, then the county seat.
After its creation in 1857, West Plains Missouri became the seat of the new Howell County and was incorporated in 1861. The County grew to slightly over 3,000 people by the outbreak of the Civil War with 150 of those in town.
As the largest city within a 100 mile radius, West Plains is still the trade and tourist center of southern Missouri and north eastern Arkansas, and still growing with a population of over 9,000.
In 1993 and 1995, West Plains Missouri received national recognition as one of "The 100 Best Small Towns in America" by Norman Crampton, a nationwide guide to the best in small town living.
